I home schooled my son a few years ago and we had a book that said that cruel punishment was not that common, actually. That people were told to leave town and then became the problem of the next over until another crime would send them packing off to another town.

Depends on what you steal and how much. Minor Punishment was a fine or forfit of a percentage of items and then moved all the way up the scale to death by hanging with chains.

From what I remember it was the removal of the right hand, or both also beheading depending on the severity of the theft. I got this somewhere back in high school about 12 years ago.

nothing so drastic as cutting your hand off
the regular punishment was i believe to be stuck in the 'stocks' in the village/town square/centre - and people would walk past you and throw rotten fruit and vege etc at you
i.e. public humiliation
