Yes there is a difference in this;
To be at our best we have to continually strive (try) for the goal set before us.
Hebrews 12:1-3
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

First off life doesn't require that you be your best or try to be your best; those are only requirements that you can make on yourself. You can just as easily decide to be your worst or something in between. I think it is often called free will on how you live your life each day.

Life requires that we learn through the bad and good experiences, that we will become our best even if it takes a few tries to gain the knowledge to do it better.
So basically life requires we try, make mistakes, learn from them, and become the best that God knows we can be. What a good teacher- life long learning experiences.

I believe, Life requires what you require for yourself. while Neale Donald walsch mentions in his book, Conversations with God, he says, that there is no such thing called Wrong and right. While leading your own life, you might want to be at your best but its not always possible, or it might just be possible. However, you can try, being at your best. which i think is always possible.
Cheers!

No but it sure makes the journey a little more pleasant for everyone around including ourselves. Or we could just be all negative & be miserably sour and not give a damn! That sounds like a long hard ride!

being you best is trying your best. Sometimes you don't know if it's your best. I've been depressed for a long time and am better but i don't know if this is my best.

as a human, we cannot be our best. it is our nature to have to have guidance and beliefs help us through life, but yes,we can always try our best, even though we sometimes fail.

Both... there are situations that "be our best" is easy. Other situations, we need to "try our best" (put more effort).
Peace!
