I waited tables for a year and a half at a Cracker Barrel. Then I became a Nurse Aide and have worked in a nursing home for the past 9-10 months. I don't like it. The work is just nasty. The poltics of hospitals and nursing homes are crazy. There really isn't good money in health care either, unless you are a nurse or doctor etc.. I'm having trouble paying the bills. I never had that problem while I waited tables. I got my first waitress job from a friend. So I'm not really sure what the next step is now that I want to wait tables again. How do I make myself stand-out (in a good way) as an applicant?

Also, do cocktail servers or bartenders make good money? Does anyone have any general advice on those jobs?

Of considered Denny's 3rd shift. Does any think that is a good/bad idea?

Im a cocktail waitress in a casino (6yrs)... I have waitressed my entire life at places such as restaurants etc. The best way to apply is just to show up and fill out a application, look nice, smile and have good conversation skills, people skills! During your interview you really just want to tell them about your experience with waitessing and that you enjoyed it and demonstrate good conversation while talking to them. Thats the most important thing in waitressing really...people skills! Oh and bartenders do make good money and comparing the money I make cocktailing to the money i made waitressing.... cocktailing is better

I have not heard alot about Denny... but if you have a Red Lobster in your area I have heard they make good money

Denny's third shift is a horrible idea. I worked as an overnight server at Steak N' Shake. Drunks and younger people were my only clients and they rarely tipped. It was an easy job, but I could have made much more during the day shift.

Attach a resume to your application and make sure you appear to be very happy during your interview. Dress sharp and don't speak negatively about any job you've had.(Not Even about the Nurse aid position you have now.) Managers hiring staff that work with the always for positive, bubbly personalities. Anyways, best of look on your job hunt.

While 3rd shift hours can be a solution, they also put you in an environment of some tough customers.

Is there anyplace comparable to Cracker Barrel in your area? Can you go back to the place part-time to augment your wages?

I'd go to a place that is a step up from your previous and apply there. Dress for success of the job. Wear the best clothes you have for what would be appropriate for that environment.

The reason I say to go to a place that is a step up is because people like workers who are geared for success.

Try banquet work too. It's usually part-time and could augment your present wages.

Politics happen in every business.

Good luck.

I only advise you to be as much cool-minded and smiling as possible to succeed in this field. Start this job regardless of the pay and you will find it more rewarding with the passage of time if you put into practice the advice I have just given. Good wishes. since you have prior experience i would recommend working for a higher end restaurant just because you'll work less and get more tips...try a Red Lobster or a steak house
