I agree w/ 1st respondent, aside being both Fascist, Strategic Location is very vital motive to gain conquest and rule. But definitely, Italy , with Benito Mussolini is just a stepping stone to the ultimate war gains objective of Adolf Hitler. Adolf is not a sentimental idiot, he is proven dire Selfish, rude to gain popularity and world power. An atheist who finds no love in his heart. His worst childhood speaks of his adult (Adolf) furious motive, but a lucky man. Italy is a gateway to many European territories, much more to the open sea good for supremacy on land and water. Friendship therefore is not an end but a mere vehicle to Godless ulterior motive of AH to rule for supremacy. Thus needs and Thank to the confederation of the Allied Forces to stop the reign of the Axis power were Hitler is a major Sucker and manipulator. Imagine millions of Jews annihilated, gas chambered, even his very own parents discarded even records just to show he is born supreme and perfect! He even dislocate the real origin of his birth...Austrian or Bavarian? But let us thank Hitler to show us not to let such kind of Dictator be given a chance to the rests of World History domination...even any nation of booming power, whether economic or military arms, their strong God Fearing Citizens must be always on guard to stop from the bud any Adolfing Hitlering leaders of their nation. Power is drunkening, tempting, alluring, and Greedy.

Sorry, but its not worthy to emulate the motives of Hitler, we might be doing discomfort and disgrace to the real peace loving German people. I have great respect to their Intelligence and Culture, Hail Germany, Hail the Germans all over the World.

Politically their philosophies were very similar.
Hitler dreamt of some Teutonic past when the Germans were feared and Mussolini dreamt of the time when Rome was invincible.
Hitler never admired Mussolini and was always critical of the ability of the Italian armed forces but the alliance gave him access to the Mediterranean Sea which was very important for attacking British interests there and vital for his campaign in North Africa to try to reach the Suez canal and the oil supplies of the Middle East
This alliance may have been a factor in Germany losing the war because Hitler had to delay the start of his attack on Russia by six weeks in 1941 to assist the Italians who were having trouble in their invasion of Greece.
If he had stated on the original date the Nazis may have reached Moscow before winter started and the outcome of the war may have been different.

Mostly ideological ones. They were both fascist countries led by megalomaniacs with delusions of grandeur. Militarily the Italians turned out to be terrible allies, they had to be rescued repeatedly. Also, Italy was the only like minded nation that was remotely in a position geographically to help Germany. Japan was simply to far away to be much help, even if they had wanted to.
