Cutting list is a list of the raw materials you will need for a project, or can refer to the parts that have already been pre-cut to the proper dimensions.

Some good suggestions so far.

Essentially what a cut list does; formal or scribbled on a paper towel with a pencil; is give you an idea of what cuts must be made from what lumber you have. The idea is LESS WASTE.

Assume you're building a simple book shelf unit from 1 x 12 Pine. Obviously pre measuring the space it will fit in, and the lumber once you're ready to cut is primary. You should also know that in the measuring; it might be less expensive to buy 1 x 12 x 12 planks and cut; rather than buy pre-cut.

An example might be: You want the book shelf unit to be 4 ft. wide. Taking into account the side pieces at approx 1 1/2 inch total thickness; your shelves might have to be cut at 46 1/2. In that sceanrio a 12 ft. plank would allow 3 shelves; with blade width cuts; allowing 139.5 off for the shelves and approx 3/8 to 1/2 for the blade width leaving you a piece approx. 1 x 12 x 8 inches of waste.

The list is like a blueprint of the project in quanties/ sizes/ etc. AND Species of lumber might not be so critical in the list.

Woodworking covers so many facets that it's difficult to come up with a tool list that covers the needs of every woodworker. Many tools are used for a very specific task, while others are more general tools that you find yourself using for most projects. The latter is what I'll concentrate on in this article. Just keep in mind that if you want to learn how to make guitars (a Luther), or build a canoe, etc...there will definitely be tools that you will need that won't be on this list. This is just to get you started. I've been working wood for over 10 years and trust me there are still many tools I would love to have. But just like I did you start with the basics and buy other tools as you find a need for them. a cutting list is a list of the size of the cut boards needed for the job. It also includes the type of wood(eg oak) and the thickness.

10' x 4" 3/4 oak
2'x4' birch plywood
etc.
