It depends on what culture you are talking about.

Chinese & Japanese cultures revere the dragon. It is considered good fortune for children to be born under the dragon sign.

England, Europe consider them evil and that they should be wiped off the face of the planet. Probably cus they cannot be controlled, trained or made to bend to the will of man.

Dragons have been around for a very long time; they were dinosaurs before they were dragons. Almost every culture has a dragon depiction.

Good luck with your project.

The dragon is a mythical creature typically depicted as a gigantic and powerful serpent or other reptile with magical or spiritual qualities.
In medieval symbolism, dragons were often symbolic of apostasy and treachery, but also of anger and envy, and eventually symbolized great calamity. Several heads were symbolic of decadence and oppression, and also of heresy. They also served as symbols for independence, leadership and strength. Many dragons also represent wisdom; slaying a dragon not only gave access to its treasure hoard, but meant the hero had bested the most cunning of all creatures. In some cultures, especially Chinese, or around the Himalayas, dragons are considered to represent good luck and fortune.
Dragons are often held to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. In many Eastern and Native American cultures dragons were, and in some cultures still are, revered as representative of the primal forces of nature and the universe. Many pre-Columbian cultures were fascinated by the power of dragons. The Moche people depicted dragons frequently in their ceramics. They are associated with wisdom—often said to be wiser than humans—and longevity. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power, and are often associated with wells, rain, and rivers. In some cultures, they are also said to be capable of human speech.

The figure of dragons is different depending on what time and what couture you are looking for.

Let’s start with medieval.
Western dragons were mostly described as evil. This is because the simple fact they were carnivorous. The roil was possibly to scar children in to listening to there parents or even in a political way hint kings and absolute power. That or people did not like them so this is where the dungeon and dragon story came from.

Eastern dragons (mainly focusing on Chinese dragons) were a symbol of good and if you look at couture they still play a big roil in religion and every day comics ect. they were (to some people) dipicted a "gods" but to most were a symble of the emperer and the chinese sperite. they were said to control nature and scare off evil doers. (this to me is where it goes off in tto drunkiness but don't mind me)

MODERN TIME

if you look around you can still see dragons every where look on T-shirts, pants, coats, cars, video games, movies, TV, even science discussions about the "what if" question witch is so much fun to ask here. If you are one who likes to use symbology in describing things the dragon cam is used for a good and bad note to what ever you’re talking about. look at how much dragons have changed too in them selves, you see them more in kids shows as good then movies as good or bad.(I think they are both cool).

People in America being the melting pot couture is mixed all over so dragons as well as other things still play a big roil in life just not as much as before.

and for the dragon strickly not being real nobody knows about that have you proben it. I think they were real but not with all the powers and what not just as a simple animal that was killed off and no one has found fossils.

Dragons are mythological creatures. In Western culture, the dragon is traditionally a symbol of evil. The dragon loves gold and kidnaps and imprisons the beautiful, virginal princess.
In Chinese culture, the dragon is a symbol of the emperor. It represents power.

Dragons don't exist, if that's what you're thinking at the moment.
They are strictly a figment of mythology. They are mostly portrayed as antagonists in fictional medieval stories.

So what contribution do they give to a culture? Media (i.e. video games, movies, books, etc.).

People still like dragons, right? :s

A figure of destruction. I cant elaborate much. Just like any other story, somebody has to take the villain role, the dragon.
