Hey,

I need help with writing the Ionic and Net Ionic equations for these:

1.)CH4 (g) + O2 (g) -----> CO2 (g) + H2O(l)
2.) Mg(s) + 2HOH(l) -----> H2(g) + Mg(OH)2 (aq)

The main reason why I am not getting these is because I am not sure if the gases break apart into ions when writing the Ionic equation. Ex:

CH4 (g)

Does that break apart into C (+/-4) (g) + 4H (g)

Thanks alot!!!!

1. CH4 (g) + 2O2 (g) -----> CO2 (g) + 2H2O(l)
No Ionic or Net Ionic equation, unless CO2 further dissolve into H2O as follows:
CO2 + H2O ----> H2CO3 -----> H+ + HCO3-

2. Mg(s) + 2HOH(l) -----> H2(g) + Mg(OH)2 (aq)
and Mg(OH)2 -----> Mg++ + 2 OH-
