My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans
A man wakes up in his cozy bed on a regular Sunday morning. He gets ready and reads the newspaper. Later he gets in his car, turns on some music and goes to church. That man just experienced something that millions of people will never be able to. He experienced the Freedom of the Press, the Freedom of Speech, and the Freedom of Religion. In many third world countries, people are restricted, not given freedoms.
America has freedom, something for which Americans can never be thankful enough. We get used to being free and doing what we want. Who can we thank for this freedom?
Since America was found, we have had fifty million men and women serve in the military. Right now, over twenty-five million veterans are still alive. There are many veterans, and we, as individuals, should honor them. They are our heroes, no matter what they say. They risked their lives.
Americans take everything for granted. One thing that almost all of us lac

lack is a thankful attitude. Many act grateful for a while, but then just forget about the veterans who fought for us. Think of 9/11. There was a surge of patriotism. However, now just four years later, we have grown comfortable again. Most Americans think, “I deserve this freedom”. We don’t. Without our veterans in all our seventeen wars, major and minor, we might not be a free country.
We can do a lot for our veterans. We just don’t realize it. Something that really does make a difference and really does make their day is to simply say thank you. Some other things are simple like saying the Pledge of Allegiance and actually meaning it. We can stand and honor our flag when it waves. We can show respect when veterans pass by in parades. I realize that all of these things can never pay back the veterans for what they did. I realize that they risked everything they had. So all we can do is try, and to always remember what our heroic veterans did.

Something that helped many soldiers during wars is the fact that Americans can live free. Many soldiers ended up paying the ultimate price for us. So one of the greatest things we can do is to simply live a life of freedom.

As we lay in our beds at night, they are in the ditches preserving our freedoms. They do this selflessly, they are the boy next door and the doctor you saw yesterday, and the carpenter that added to the porch. They come from all walks of life, with skin hues of every color, religions ranging from Christian to Muslim and every religion in between. They represent every nation on earth, they are the American Veterans, they are soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines. Let us honor our veterans by not just attending picnics and parades, but also by understanding the sacrifices they made and the history they left behind.
All gave some and some gave all in defending their country, their families and their friends. There will always be those who lash out at military persons who are doing their job but there will also always be those who when they see the United States Flag flying free and proud, get tears in their eyes and realize how thankful and grateful we all should be to the United States Veterans.

Veterans must be honored because they spent the best times of their lives serving the country so that their fellowmen will be able to sleep peacefully while they fought wars in other countries.
