Greetings, being a retired pharmacy asst I have to tell you not very many of them really work well. The medications that have pseudoephedrine in them are the best ones for stopping the congestion in the nose, ears, throat and chest. To shorten the duration of the cold I would suggest Zicam zinc nose spray, vitamin C drops Robitussan makes a tasty orange one, also to take coldeze brand name zinc cough drops. I would drink alot of water and cranberry juice to flush your body, tons of chicken noodle soup, bed rest, and try to sweat it out, bundle up.

Hello-
2000 mg/Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C)/twice a day
clear liquids
diet w/o refined foods
bed rest
It's recommended to stay away from any OTC drugs. By taking OTC drugs, you are making your body work even harder to metabolize and detox the drug while trying to fight your cold.
A solid remedy is 2000 mg of Ascorbic Acid, (best form of Vitamin C), in powder form at least twice a day and until symptoms improve. Mix one heaping teaspoonful in a large glass of water. If you feel the onset of a cold, or during your cold, consuming large amounts of Vitamin C will boost your immune system similar like Nitrous Oxide to a car. It's very effective. Some Emergen-C brand packets contain large amounts of Ascorbic Acid and are very handy. You can buy these at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for sure.
Also, the old saying goes, starve a cold and feed a fever. This is true. A large portion of your immune system is housed within your gut/stomach.. and so is your bug. Choose wisely the foods you eat. Avoid refined foods as these take extra work to digest and you want your body to focus on eradicating the bug, not go into overdrive for digestion.
Hope this helps...

If you're congested, I highly recommend you take your driver's license and head to the counter of your local pharmacy to get some real pseudoephedrine. It's no longer available on the shelves, so you'll have to ask for it. I've found phenylephrine (the decongestant commonly used in cold medicines now) does NOTHING for me when I'm congested.
