The storyline of a comet or space debris falling into the atmosphere of the Earth and fragments fall here and there and the character(s) who comes upon those fragments or pieces gain(s) superpowers? In popular cartoons? Comic books? Novels, what? Anyone know? Any help would be appreciated.

Any stories other than just Loonatics Unleashed? Just wondering....

Funny you should ask that! Check out the site Superman Through the Ages. They have a never-before published story on there, The K-Metal from Krypton.

This was supposed to be the first appearance of Kryptonite, and it not only took away Superman's powers, it gave super power to Earth people! (That is something that was not seen again until the Smallville TV show!)

Other characters, There was a Spider Man villain, I think he was called the Leaper. He got his powers by inhaling the fumes from recently-landed meteorites. (Sort of the opposite of what happened last week in South America!) He started stealing meteors from museum collections to try to increase his power levels, and Spidey stopped him.

The beloved and much missed (in some circles) Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew all gained their powers from exposure to meteor fragments which had come in contact with Superman and Starro the Conqueror! CCAHAZC was published by Dc for several years, then faded. It was a rare funny-animal/super hero comic.

I guess there must be ancient legends or accounts of meteorites landing on Earth and causing great devastation, since back in the medieval days people were frightened of comets and prayed that they would not get too near or would go away again.

In a classic Superman story (which you can also find at Superman through the ages) there was a villainess called Saturn Queen, who had the power of telepathic hypnosis. She didn't become evil until she left Saturn, and Superman realized that there was something about the rings of Saturn that kept her from becoming evil before. He gave her a piece of rock taken from the rings and she was good from then on.

The Encyclopedia of Super Heroes lists a Comet and a Meteor, but they didn't get their powers from those sources.

Fire Lad of the Legion of Substitute Heroes gained the ability to breather flames after inhaling weird vapors from a meteor that crashed near him.

Metamorpho supposedly gained his powers from being exposed to a meteor in an Egyptian tomb.

There are probably others.
