When Wellbutrin was tested as an anti-depressant, the participants noticed a decrease in the craving for a cigarette and complained that it made their cigs taste bad. Wellbutrin was then tested on smokers specifically. It was found to work well to help people stop smoking and was re-marketed as Zyban. It doesn't matter if the pills say "Wellbutrin" or "Zyban" they are the same. Wellbutrin can easily be prescribed for a depressed patient who also smokes. It's also good for a depressed patient who has ADHD. I can't say why your mother takes these pills. Just be glad she has them.

Wellbutrin can be prescribed for either depression or smoking cessation. I took it in the past for depression and my husband took it to quit smoking.

I would think it would be for depression as this is its main use,.
If she wants to quit smoking suggest she try herbpharm avena licorice compound, I got a 30 year smoker would wanted to quit on this and he quit successfully and said he had no cravings at all for five days which amazed me as when I quit 30 years ago, I had continual cravings for some time. It is not the best thing to use to quit smoking as it has serious side effects for some. Some some people taking SSRI antidepressants find they become suicidal or that their depression increases..this happened to me. I was suicidal for 15 years when taking these D
SSRI antidepressants but it was not known or covered up then but now the FDA puts a black box warning label on them. But not everyone has this reaction..many are helped but some are made much worst..see this man's website for books about the dangers of these psychiatric drugs and better ways to help. http://www.breggin.com/
I am sorry if I scared you, but I feel honesty is best.

Wellbutrin is prescribed to help relieve major depression. Symptoms include a severely depressed mood (for 2 weeks or more) and loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities accompanied by sleep and appetite disturbances, agitation or lack of energy, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, decreased sex drive, inability to concentrate, and sometimes, suicidal thoughts or behavior. Wellbutrin is thought to work by altering levels of the brain chemicals norepinephrine and dopamine.

I believe it is mostly used for depression, but I have heard of it for smoking cessation. Leave your mom alone. Whatever she is using it for, at least you know she is seeing a doctor and taking care of whatever needs to be taken care of.

I tookit for awhile as a few people I know have, and all of us took it for depression. I think that is the MOST likely reason. Try to support your mom and just be a good listener if she needs it. We all get down sometimes and at least this is a sign that she is taking care of herself and realizes something's up:)

Could be either or both. You were sooooo wrong and sooo inappropriate to go through you mothers' drawer. I can't believe you did that. The fact that you did that is way more important than anything you found there. Do you just have no respect for her at all? Wow.

When the drug was first introduced, it was used for mild depression. After awhile it was found that it worked better for smoking cessastion. Quitting smoking is what it is maily prescribed for now.
