I removed about 13 feet by 3 feet of carpet in the living room. Directly underneath the carpet pad is 99% of the area covered with black tar (sticky) and small pieces of carpet pad stuck to it. The 1 %, I believe, is cement cause I used a utility knife to cut into it. Also, the other bedrooms and hallways do not have black tar glue beneath the carpet pad.
I had new carpets put in when I lst moved in 2001. The house is built in 1958.

no. they didn't use asbestos in carpet glue.

Anything built before 1970 could contain asbestos. Yes, it was used in adhesives. Have it tested, should only cost about $60.

It is some type of cement used for tile. Its still there because its so hard to remove. When I put new linoleum in my kitchen they covered over the old which had the black sticky stuff holding it down.
