Algebra question- solving the variable for an equation?

I think i got the right answer
heres the problem

solve using complex number and completing the square

(w-1)^2=9 .............................^2= 2 squared

w-1 = +/- 3
w = 4 or -2

I don't see the need of using complex number or completing sq.
