I am from the south and don't know anything about the northeast. We are also going to Maine for a couple of days so any B&B ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Boston has several lovely areas. While I agree that Copley Sq comes to mind, as you are right by Newbury St, I personally find most of the hotels there to be quite run of the mill upscale chains. Very nice but nothing especially special. If you choose that area I think the nicest choice is The Four Seasons on the Boston Common which has been a mainstay of elegance, and while not in Copley Sq is close to that area. Aujourd'hui remains Boston's top restaurant as well. http://www.fourseasons.com/boston/?source=tabostonimage. The other good choice in that area IMHO is the Copley Plaza, which remains a stately Grande Dame.

My personal suggestion if looking for a lovely hotel would be to consider staying at one of the Waterfront hotels. The Boston Harbor hotel is absolutely lovely. http://bhh.com/ Nothing beats the magic of the view of the Boston Harbor, and you will be conveniently by Fanuiel Hall. And the good thing about Boston is that everything is a short T ride or cab hop away. (Or walkable if that is your style).

You might want to poke around this site; http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60745-d89575-Reviews-Boston_Harbor_Hotel-Boston_Massachusetts.html I find it very useful to read reviews and see additional pics. This is the link to the first hotel I mentioned but as you an see it is easy to look at all the Boston Hotels. I think it's a great resource and hope it helps! Although personally I don't totally agree w/all the ratings. There are a few in the top 10 that wouldn't be in my top 10, so allow for personal taste etc. But still a great tool IMHO.

If you need a lovely B & B in New Hampshire I could suggest a few, but don't know any first hand in Maine...sorry!

The upscale part of Boston proper is called Back Bay. Basically runs Fenway to Boston Common between Boylston St. and the Charles River. Copley Plaza has a Marriott and a Westin, Sheraton, Lenox, Park Plaza, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton.... Copley Plaza and Prudential Center are tied together with an upscale shopping mall, you can go from one to the other inside.

For Maine, where in Maine? I'd suggest that you won't go wrong if you pick an inn from the Select Registry.

Copley Place - it is close to everything and very nice. I have stayed in the Marriott in Copley Place several times and won't stay anywhere else. There is a walkway to the Prudential Center, which is great and the subway is right there. While you are in Boston, make sure you visit Faniuel Hall and the Boston Gardens/Commons. For a great place to eat, visit fire and ice. It is a great price and alot of food. Enjoy your trip and go Sox!
