First off join the American Motorcyclist Association, they are the only sanctioning body in the United States and they protect your right to ride. Second get to a motorcycle racing school in your area, if you don't have one and live in California, the Californai Suberbike Schoold is the best way to go. Don't let a friend teach you. Get professional teaching.

What kind of Racing? (Moto GP, Supermoto, Motocross, Flattrack, ETC....)

first take a roadracing class.
then join CCS. Champion Cup Series
then try to get on AMA
if you go to the CCS website you can find links to suitable roadracing schools
