Your suports can come down from your ceiling beams. Connecting them to the floor of the loft. That is if you are using a 4x6 beam up top with through bolts.

I'd be inclined to spend the extra money and go with the floor joist suggestion.

I'd have to know the roof structure before ever wanting a floor to HANG from it.

Certainlt too is the load that might have to be supported in double ledgers and beams supporting the loft floor. "FLOOR TRUSSES" are far better as a choice.

If your looking to span 20 feet you have no idea what your doing. These people giving you advise, do they or, are they aware you said "Barn" are you talking about putting hay up there?
Then you'd better think about supports or your going to have a second floor on the first, real fast. I've seen it happen. Twenty feet as quite a span if it's going to be kept empty, then O.K. I'll go along with what the others say but, you did say "Barn" and I'm thinking lots of hay.

For that type of span you will probably need to consult an engineer. If you already have a building permit that will be required anyway. Chances are you will need some sort of a flitch plate = (2) 2x10 lumber with 1/2 inch steel sandwiched in between. Fastened with through bolts. Engineer will advise if 2x8 or 2x10 is required.

It depends on the 'per sq. ft.` loading of the loft floor.
With any significant load, you're into something
far larger than 2 x 12.
Look into engineered joists.
This is NOT a DIY engineering application.
'Do the numbers` or take the consequences.

Try engineered lumber; laminated structural joists. Stronger than wood.

i think i would use microlams -- engineered beams / joists made for spanning long stretches -- love to use them for large garage door openings

I believe the new composites can make the span, saw it on 'This Old House'.
