Anyone know if you can carry pumped and stored breastmilk on an airplane?

I totally agree with you that say nurse on the plane - I plan on doing so on the trip that I bring my baby. My concern is actually a business trip I am taking next week. I hate to waste that milk I pump while out of town. It seems weird that you can only carry breastmilk on if you have a baby - how many women pump and bring bottles if their baby accompanies them? It is more when I do not have my baby with me and need to transport it home.

yes, there are supposed to be no regulation on it anymore.

here's the details from the USA's Transportation Security Administration: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm#4

and I don't believe that any other country's rules are different.

If you plan to travel with baby, it's much easier to just nurse. Yes, it's cramped and the stranger beside you may get an eye full, but feeding bottles all day is such a hassle.

If you are just carrying milk (with no baby) I wonder if you could still be exempt from the liquid rules? You might want to call ahead and check.

Suggir, I agree that it is hard to manage nursing on an airplane. I have to say that I don't care if the person next to me is using the laptop or not. A hungry baby is more important. If not more important, then more urgent. I'm sure the person next to you would be happy to put the laptop away rather than listen to a baby cry. My babies would not take a bottle. I cannot imagine a breastfeeding baby allowing mom to give a bottle. It's a hassle to carry milk and bottle in the airport. My sister did it. I just nursed and I was far more relaxed. Yes, I exposed an inch or two of breast on the airplane. Not a big deal. Now airplane diaper changes . . . that's difficult!

The rules are ALWAYS changing!

We went on two trips in the past two years. Once to San Fransico and another to India. We had issues both times carrying milk for our son. At least it wasn't as bad the second time when we flew to India. I needed a mega stash of milk!

Thank god now you are allowed all the milk you need for your baby! The offical link is below. Keep it book marked and double check before your flight. They have and will change at a moments notice.

The worst is when you are in line at security...as happened to me. They nearly threw it all away!!

PS: I nursed on our first trip when ds was nearly seven months. The problem is you are so close it's uncomfortable to handle a larger infant. Mine was nearly crawling. And, just a big boy. Plus, he was so intrigued by everyone around him. And the plane itself he didn't want to nurse with a blanket or the bulk of my sweater making me decent.

Not to mention my seat companions were trying to work on their laptops. Even on the way home (we met hubby at a business confrence) I ran into the same thing. Thankfully he was really nice and had been there with his wife and kids.

As of now, it is ok to bring breast milk on an airplane as long as you have an infant. I always find it much easier to bring a very light blanket and safety pin (you could always sew a button or snap) the corners around my neck and feed my baby in "privacy" under the blanket.

You can, but why? I'm going on a trip this week, you better believe I'm going to nurse my baby on the plane! It helps calm and relax them on takeoff and landings far better than a bottle. Don't worry about nursing in public, people don't care and you have a legal right to do so.

You should be able to - check with the airline first, but typically, both formula and breastmilk are exempt from the ban on liquids.

i remember when they made that one woman drink the milk before she could go on the plane to prove it was breast milk... how messed up are TSA officers now? hopefully that has all changed..i rememebr that was sometime last year, whats the point of bringing it if you have to drink it all yourself.?

To be extra careful, you could always just keep it in under 3oz bottles, in the one quart ziploc. If more than one of you are travelling, pack multiple carry on ziplocs with it. But remember one ziploc per person. Plus if the baby has its own seat, they also get the carry ons.

i remember seeing something about being able to take it onboard....as long as you have an infant with you. i went on a week long trip without my daughter and had to pump and dump since i wasn't able to freeze it and bring it home with me.
