I have lost alot of weight and want to take some peasant type long skirts that I love and take the elastic out of the waist casings and make them draw string instead so I don't need to replace the skirts. Can I just take the seams out of the casings on one side and remove the elastic, put the seam back in and thread a draw string through the resulting casing? Is there any other alternations I should do then as well? Do I need to take the side seams in or anything else or will just putting a draw string in work?

You can try it that way, but there are shortcuts too. You can open up just the side seam on the waistband and see if the elastic is floating loose in there. If it is, pull it out, cut a chunk out of it, sew the rest back together and tuck it back in. Or pull it out and thread your drawstring through.

If making the waist smaller looks funny because of too much fabric bunching up and causing big folds over your hips, you can just run up the side seams with a sewing machine and make both seams smaller. Put it on inside out and pin it to determine how much you should take off each seam. When you're done, cut away the extra seam allowance with pinking shears.

I would try just replacing the elastic with the drawstring first, if the skirt bunches up too much, you would have to run a seam down the sides and trim away the excess.

You may be able to run a drawstring through one of the channels where the elastic is sewn down, too. Broomstick skirts and pajama pants frequently have both elastic and a drawstring at the waist and then you wouldn't have to do all that unpicking to get the elastic out.

The elastic will probably be sewn into the hem of the casing and will take a while to unpick. Redoing the casing and threading with either a drawstring or new tighter elastic should work fine. Congratulations on your weight loss.

Depends on how the elastic was originally installed. Sometimes it was threaded through a casing and other times it is sewn to th elastic for the full length.
