I heard a few years ago that the Earth will change its direction of spin in the year 2012, but i haven't heard anything new on it, such as the specific date (if there is one) and any changes to the theory.

the people who answered are clueless, 3 ancient cultures predicted the end of the world in 2012 and 2 of them, aztecs and chinese, predicted well over 2000 years ago that it will be on the same day, dec 21 2012. look it up, fascinating stuff!

The world will not end in 2012, nor will it reverse its spin. The fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 means nothing. Calendars are arbitrary, artificial concepts that enable us to keep track of the passage of time. If I were so inclined, I'm sure I could come up with a calendar system that would expire tomorrow. Would that cause the world to end? Of course not. This whole 2012 craze is simply a large-scale Internet hoax.

The way I understand it is that on dec. 21, 2012 our sun, the earth and the center of the milky way will line up causing a celestial occurrence that may effect the earths polarity. The Mayan kept 4 different calendars; the hob, the tolken, the calendar round, and the long count. the hob and tolken were use to create the calendar round which is a 52 year cycle, and the long count end on dec. 21, 2012. The Mayans were obsessed with time and if they're right we're in for one hell of a winter solstice, good luck.
P.S. I don't think your computer is 2012-compliant, seeing that a pole shift will set off an E.M.P. (electro-magnetic pulse) causing all power to fail at once, not to mention the effect this may have on the ocean, causing a true sea change.

The whole December 2012 thing is based on the Asian and Mayan calendars that say that a "New Era" will begin.

It doesn't say that the earth will be destroyed or that everyone will die... It means that the old era will end and a new era will begin...

This has been interpreted as everything from Armageddon to the invention of time travel. (Which would negate the calendar of the Mayan's and could be seen as the end of the old era)

It is impossible for the earth to change the direction of its spin... you might be thinking about the reversal of the magnetic poles.

The poles have reversed in the past so it is possible for it to happen again...

If it happens it will jack up our ecosystem for quite some time...

They have shows on discovery channel about this... Keep an eye out. FACINATING subject.

The theory, if it ever was one, was nonsense from the beginning; the earth has never reversed its spin in 4.5 billion years, and won't ever do so. Its spin is slowly decreasing due to friction of the tides; this is causing the distance from the earth to the moon to increase about an inch a year. The only significance of the year 2012 is that the Mayan calendar rolls over in that year.

Well it's been spinning the way it is for 4 billion years so about time for a change. I look forward to it. Then Australia will be behind the rest of the world on the international time zones and we can watch all the good overseas sport on a Saturday night rather than Sunday nights when we have to work the next day.
Bring it on.

It may change it's magnetic poles, but it will never reverse its spin. The earth's magnetic poles flip every few 100 thousand years or so, which the sun will do in 2012 since it does every 11 years.

Honestly, I wonder how of you are watching this crap on television thinking that it's valid science. I find it incredible that some people can attribute more value to the ideas of people who lived thousands of years ago - when most people thought the Earth was flat and basically knew nothing about the universe -than the findings of the world's smartest scientists in the twenty-first century. Unbelievable.

Not a chance

2012 is the year that the mayan callender starts over again. Intelligent Mayan elders know that this means absolutely nothing.

T.V. has got people believing that it's the end of the world again. Just like in 1984, and 2000.

no. not quite.
I've never heard of anything like that, But I have heard it will reverse it's
Polarity of its Magnetic Field.
north becomes south and south becomes north.
The planet's spin will not be effected.

not a HUGE problem, but we will have a few volcanoes erupt, weather will change and things will get cold for a while, but humans should be smart enough to survive it.

then everything will be fine until the next switch.

we seem to be expecting one about 2400

2012 is when the myan calander is supposed to end. leading to the end of the world.
I think its supposed to bring and end to an old era and bring in a new time.

not to kill everyone.
