Bad thermocouple. It is a tubular metal piece that gets heated up by the pilot flame. and makes a very small amount of electricity that allows the burner valve to provide gas to the main burner.

It is what makes the whole thing safe to use. If your pilot light
goes out then the main burner doesn't come on and fill the house with gas........

they are easy to change. but if your not mechanically inclined I'd suggest getting a certified tech to do it.

Your pilot flame should be a solid pretty blue 2 and a half inch's long. If it is yellowish and small then you have an obstruction in the ODS chamber located directly behind the pilot light. A cob web or tiny critter or dust will cause your pilot to THINK their is less oxygen in the room and cause it to prematurely malfunction. Flush the pilot assembly with rust buster and allow it to dry and retry. You can get rust buster at ACE hardware. It is nonflammable and it works as a great little solvent to flush the pilot assembly of the critters that get into there over the summer months when the heater ain't in use.

Then either your thermocouple or your control unit is bad. Go for the thermo couple first, it's the cheapest, then if that's not the problem, the control unit.
