1.
14-1/5 (j-10)= 2/5 (25+j)
14-1/5j +2= 10+2/5j
16-1/5j=10+2/5j
16-1/5j+1/5j=10+2/5j+1/5j
16=10+3/5j
16-10=10+3/5j-10
6=3/5j
6(5/3)=3/5j(5/3)
10=j
2.
1/8 (5y+64)= 1/4 (20 +2y)
5/8y +8= 5+1/2y
5/8y+8-1/2y= 5 +1/2y -1/2y
1/8y+8=5
1/8y+8-8=5-8
1/8y=-3
y=-24

Sorry. Jack's got the right idea, but 2/5 * 25 = 10, not whatever he's got there. Also, 40 - 6 = 34.
Okay... saddle up... here we go. The first thing you want to do with these is go ahead and multiply everything out, so you can isolate the variables.
1. 14 - 1/5 (j - 10) + 2/5 (25 + j) Watch the signs on this one. Remember that a minus sign means you are multiplying by a negative.
14 - 1/5 j + 2 + 10 + 2/5 j Now, adding the numerals and like terms... we get
14 + 2 + 10 + 2/5 j - 1/5 j
26 + 1/5 j
If you're solving for j, just set this equal to 0 and solve:
26 + 1/5 j = 0
1/5 j = -26 Multiplying by 5...
j = -130
2. 1/8 (5y + 6) = 1/4 (20 + 2y)
Remember when multiplying using fractions and whole numbers, its' the same as multiplying by the whole number over 1.
Let's see what we get
5/8 y + 6/8 = 5 + 1/2 y
Subtracting 6/8 from both sides, we get
5/8y = 5 + 1/2 y - 6/8
Subtracting 1/2 y from both sides...
5/8 y - 1/2 y = 5 - 6/8
Combining like terms... and converting 6/8 to 3/4
1/8 y = 5 - 3/4
1/8 y = 4 1/4
Here's a handy little thing to remember. To get y, you'll need to multiply both sides by 8. Always, when you have fractions of variables, to get rid of the fractions just multiply by the inverse fraction... 1/8 's inverse is 8/1. So..
y = (4 1/4) x 8
y = 34

14-1/5(j-10)=2/5(25+j)
70-(j-10)=2(25+j), both side times 5
70-j+10=50+2j
80-j=50+2j
-j-2j=50-80
j=10
2
1/8 (5y+6)=1/4 (20 +2y)
(5y+6)=2(20 +2y), both side times 8
5y+6=40+4y
5y-4y=40-6
y=34

1. 14-1/5(j-10)+2/5(25+j)
Multiply by five to get rid of denominators
70-(j-10)+2(25+j)
70 -j +10 + 50 +2j
=130 + j
2. 1/8 (5y+6)=1/4 (20 +2y)
Multiply by 8 to get rid of denominators
5y + 6 = 2(20 +2y)
