I'm trying to do a little detective work (being nosy) and I was wondering if a person takes their laptop overseas and sends you and e-mail, does it show a different ip address from when they are home?

Yes it would. Everytime you establish an Internet connection you can and often do get a different IP address. When you set up a wireless router with a connection through your cable, DSL, Satellite or what have you, the router gets an IANA routable IP address or access to the public IP address of the network bridge. You may end up keeping the public IP address for a long time even though your account is using DHCP.

An IANA routable IP address is often referred to as a public IP address. If an IP address is not IANA routable, you can't connect directly to the Internet using that IP address. You can connect through a router (whether Wired or Wireless) that has NAT available with a private (non IANA routable) IP address, so long as the router has access to a public IP address.

When you connect a system to a different physical location that is in a different country, your public IP address would definitely be different.

You could make things appear as you were in the same geographic location by using VPN or other methods of connecting remotely.

Most likely. IP addresses are logical addressing... they are not necessarily specific to an actual machine. If you take your notebook and use a different network, you'll have to have a different IP address for that network.

That being said, if you use a web based email server like yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc... the IP address probably won't reflect anything about the location of the computer you are using.

IP = internet Protocol and is assigned by employing the internet service service / router. Your IP address will substitute in case you employ a distinctive internet gateway (which is composed of a public Starbucks). some internet carriers even use dynamic IP the place IP changes on a usual foundation interior the comparable area.

Most likely, but it really depends on how the email was sent. If they use a web-based email account or use vpn to connect in to their office email, then the IP probably wouldn't change. If they are using a personal email address that is used by a mail client directly on their PC, then it probably would change.
