A few times, one episode was, I believe, English number 270 "The Ties that Bind", and I know for sure it appeared in episode "Can't Beat the Heat!".
As someone else mentioned all of these appearances were just visits, it still lives with it's mate in the Charific valley.

He did not return back...just made a "visit":
Season 5, episode 543 "Great Bowls of Fire". Charizard helps Ash out for the Johto championship.
Charizard never returns back to be with Ash. He lives in the Charific Valley with Charla to further train.
