It has a specific heat - silica is used as insulation on the space shuttle, because it doesn't transfer heat well compared to metals - in a desert environment, with clear air, at night the surface loses a lot of energy due to radiative heat transfer, cooling things down - the clearer and drier the air the colder an object can get... (look up black body radiation...) Most objects left in the desert would have similar behaviors...
