When people use the expression "a cry for help" after someone does something like, attempts suicide...What exactly does the saying entail?

it means the person who attempted suicide (or whatever the action in question) did it to get the attention necessary to get help with their problems. a cry for help is usually something dramatic that, if someone else were paying attention, would be an obvious sign that the person needed help or guidance.

it means the action taken by the person was a sign the person is in need of help.
