Sarah C regards them highly, so I looked at them on Youtube. They're like a trip from the past. Modern band with a classic sound. The singer isn't whiney, the lyrics make little sense (and aren't all "cut me and watch me bleed to death over your love" type of thing).

Does anyone else like them, and what would you recommend for a first album?

yes they have been my favorite band for a few years now! i just saw them last night in new york, again, and of course they have never dissappointed. based on what you are looking for would i recommend each album
on the sunday of life - acid trip (its a good thing!)
sky moves sideways - proggy prog
signify - classic-mature prog rock
stupid dream - alt prog, think radiohead's the bends
lightbulb sun - a continuation of SD, a bit pop-ier
in asentia - louder, darker rock
deadwing - even heavier, but still has its 'nice' moments
fear of a blank planet - heaviest, quiet points still intact, more modern in a way

my personal choices are stupid dream and in absentia. have fun on your quest=]

edit - i was like ... oh cool another PT question from Sarah ... N??????? lol

Hahahaha..... yea, I'm spreading the PT revolution....
If you really want the Pink Floyd sound, try The Sky Moves Sideways, its a very long trip......
If you want something that's easier to get into, try Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia, if you don't like metal, avoid the Fear of a Blank Planet, alot of it has metal influence.

Actually, with the release of Nil Recurring, their sound is becoming more up to date. It's odd that Deadwing sounds like it came out of the 70's.

It's hard to say which album to start with. I would say Nil Recurring, but it's sold out until 2008.

Some of my other favorites are:

Signify
Lightbulb Sun
In Absentia
Deadwing
Coma Divine, 2CD
Warszawa

(They have better stuff, but it's rare.)
