Okay i recently asked,"I'm writing an urban-fantasy novel and I'm going to connect it to Greek Mythology :D

I have a specific legend/myth/story from Greek Mythology that i sort of want to explain the race of my main characters.

Do you think it's a good idea to start of my story with my narrarator re-telling this myth in her own voice? And sort of ending with that, "And that's how we _____ came to be." or something like that, it's a work in progress"

but now i've decided I will do (maybe not greek mythology, some sort of ancient mythology) a myth in the beginning like a prolouge explaining how the characters race came to be, then incorprate more myths into my story like love myths and bravery myths and how they relate to my characters. It would show a whole connection to the older stories and myths of their history and connect it to what's going on in my characters life now.
What do you think of that idea also?

(if this is hard to understand, sorry.)

Since you want honesty this kind of idea has been used a little bit to death in the past few years - particularly for novels for children and teenagers (may not be your market but it is good to know).

These kinds of novels generally only work when there is a very clever twist to the story that is unexpected, or if it is very deftly written. Most readers don't have the patience to work their way through a detailed and heavy going introduction - most people can't be bothered reading things like Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit anymore because of all the layers and mythology to the story.

It has already been suggested that you take the time to create a mythology of your own. There are plenty of good examples of a mythology being created in a modern setting. Think of the Jennifer Scales series by MaryJanice Davidson - weredragons, werearachnids, etc... hiding among ordinary humans and fighting an ancient battle. Or Avalon High by Meg Cabot that has the legend of King Arthur played out in reincarnated form in a US high school. Or the Nine lives of Chloe King series by Celia Thomson which is about werelions.

Generally you should choose to write something that you would enjoy reading - if you enjoy reading about Greek Myths then go for it. But just remember that you need a punchy start for your novel - don't turn readers off with a detailed and complicated prologue.

If you can't explain the outline, gods help you writing a coherent story.
Racing in Greek mythology is about Sun vs. Moon, etc., what are you getting at? The Greeks had two races: humans & gods.
What about this: you invent a civilization, its myths, and its literature. Then you invent some words that might be poetry or prose. Then you say that one elucidates the other.
Then we'll say "gosh, this student is too insightful to spend so much time on Yahoo Answers."

Ot be honest, If I opened up a book and read the first page and it was a narrator telling Greek Mythology, I would walk away. Despite my name (a childhood nick from my father) I am not a huge fan of Greek Mythology and I don't think many others are either. You need to find a more interesting way to get into it. As is, it doesn't sound like a read for me.

This all depends on the writer. Art is truly in the eye of the reader! Just look at what Tolkien did with a little mid evil mythology and a dude with harry feet.

Just give it a little more depth and clarity than the movie "300"..
