'recreate' is the verb from which we get "recreation", but we rarely use it in that form do we?

"Hey what are you up to today?"
"this afternoon I'm going to recreate."
"wow that sounds like fun!"

does anyone use the word recreate like this? the form of the word is more commonly used in the context of re-creating something, like a battle scene in a movie re-creates the images and sounds etc.

does it lead to confusion with the word procreate?

Well procreation can also be recreation, but I don't see where there would be confusion between the two. I do hear the word recreate in the sense of having fun a little, but not near as much as in its other sense of recreating something.
