So, my school is really big in the drama and singing departmen. Every year we have a fall play, a freshmen play, and a spring musical. Well, I would really love to be in a play but at the same time I'm too scared. I think I'm just a little scared because of the seniors who are sooooo amazing at the plays and who have been doing this the longest ... and it doesn't help that they know they're good too and think that they're the best. So, I'd be happy with just a little part in the play but I would love to be a main character too. What do you think I should do?

You audition for the role that you want and prepare as best you can. If you are any good then you have a legitimate shot and if you don't get it, then they'll offer you a different role or ensemble. Just prepare, prepare, prepare. Know the show, know the role you want as well as any others they may consider you for. You write the name of the role you want, then write that you would accept any role.

If you are going for a musical, I would pick the third or fourth lead to read for and just some good songs to sing. In a musical, the director is going to be looking for both singing and acting ability and might be willing to "bump up" a good singer into a more significant role and hope they can do well because it easier to make the acting "adequate" than to make the singing "adequate."

Even if the seniors are great, a director is going to want to give a lessor but still significant role to some of the younger students because they are going to have to carry the shows next year.

Finally, just because you come in prepared to read for a particular role, that does not mean that the director might not see you as fitting a different role better. The key is memorizing the passage that you are going to read from and showing that you get what the passage is about. In other words, you should know it by heart but sound as if you are saying it on stage not like a robot reciting it back. Likewise, the song should show off your strengths as a singer. You want to pick a song that you can sing and sing well.

You might not get the role you want, but if you show the director that you have talent you should get a chance for a role that has at least a good verse or two and some lines.

If you want to audition for a role, then do so. Stop being scared -- if this is your passion, then follow it!

As for the seniors or anyone else who "knows they're good," you just ignore them completely. It's very easy to feel self-conscious around people who are more experienced, and it's also quite easy to stop being self-conscious. Rather than being afraid, try to develop some confidence and poise. You're in school -- and so are those quasi-celebrities you're in awe of. So feel free to smile at them and be courteous -- you really can b.s. your way into developing self-confidence.

Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. Even out here in the real world, whenever I encounter some egomaniacal twit who's done more prestigious projects than me and tries to make me feel belittled, I just laugh them off and pity them. Last year I worked with some potentate who tried to direct me in our scenes. When I courteously but firmly told him to stop, he said, "Well, I HAVE done a Broadway production" -- to which I truthfully replied, "So have I -- twice." That shut him up nicely.

Life is too short to let others have an adverse affect on your mental well-being.
