why was there more females over 70+ in 1996 then males?

In the case of 1996, a lot of men who would have been 70 that year were killed in WWII, Korea, or Vietnam. That's a major reason there weren't more of them around at the time. Wars kill many more men than the effects of aging do.

Well, there have always been a lot more females over 70 because women live years longer than men. The gender age gap is narrowing, but throughout all recorded history men have dropped dead sooner than women (the ultimate sex discrimination). Women, however, don't lead as prosperous nor as healthy lives, so the ideal would be for men to live longer and women to live better lives.

Thats nothing almost no German here had a grandpa, eithier Stalingrad or one of the other fronts.
