I'd be leery of a gallery that makes you pay to exhibit your art. Do research on the gallery. Are they a reputable establishment? Will they promote the show or will that be at your expense? If your work is for sale, what percentage of the profit will they take? You should also write up an consignment form. Make two copies, one for you and one for the gallery. This way, there is a record of what art the gallery has of yours. You may want to also look to your state's Art Council for information on your rights as an artist.

As an artist, and yes, I am an artist that has sold a lot of work. I've had shows in galleries, museums and a couple of banks, so I know for a fact, "You shouldn't have to pay to exhibit your work." If the gallery claims to like your work, they'll give you space for it and get a commission off what they sell for you. (Jeez, do people like that really exist, people who try to get you to pay to exhibit your artwork? Where are they located, the Taj Mahall?)
