Yes, shoulder as well as pectoral development are the keys to attaining upper-body strength, which is necessary for those strong drives to the hoop.

For your shoulders, you can do a lot of exercises using your dumbells. Start with overhead dumbell presses. Follow it up with side lateral raises and finish off your routine with shoulder shrugs. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions for each exercise. For your chest, start off with lying (on bench)dumbell presses, then dumbell flyes and lastly, dumbell pull-overs at the same number of sets and reps as your shoulder routine. Hope this helps.

yea i have that problem too. after thinking about it for a while, i don't think you need to be necesarily strong to drive, its just how much you weight as opposed to who you're going against b/c when there is contact the lighter person usually ends up being knocked away from the hoop. however, don't just but on bad weight b/c that will slow you down and make you get tired faster too, put some muscle weight on. also, think about having your shoulders lower than the defender's shoulders b/c you are more balanced, stronger and have a lower center of gravity. you initiate the contact and have your shoulder go into the defenders shoulder, think about driving him out of your way, but don't overdo it. also try to make some moves to avoid the defense, i like spining to avoid the big men down low when i drive b/c i am much quicker and i get from one side to the other and hit the layup before they can block me. try a floater or pull up and if you can't do any of that just try to draw the foul, go into them and fall, you'll probably get the call

good luck

It's not just your arms that have to be strong/shoulders. You should work on your legs too because they are what helps you jump and maneuvre through the defense. Hope that helped
