When I plug it into my freinds desktop computer a message comes up hardware not recognised, or a message like that,, My computer is also desk top. At my local internet cafe,,, same thing, Can someone please explain this.?

What operating system is your friend's computer running? Did any drivers come with your external disk?
As to defrag, mount the disk on your PC, open my computer, right click on the drive, choose the Tools tab, and click on the defrag button.

ok when y put it in your friends computer or another one.
try going through the "my computer" folder on an microsoft os platform. open the external from there that may fix the problem/ allow y to open the contents.

you defrag you hard drive by going to my computer right clicking on your hard drive click properties go to tools and defraf now
