If you are not an experienced computer technician, you should not go messing around with things that you know nothing about.

Maybe you can carefully bend the "pins back", but the way it sounds it's too late to do that now.

You may need more than a new CPU, you may need the whole motherboard now, depending upon the damaged caused.

You should take it to the computer shop now, only they can tell you what needs to be replaced. Have them give you an estimate.

Seeing how the Compaq model computer you have is already going on almost 4 years old, you may find it more cost effective to salvage what you can off it, ie hard drive, and just buy a new computer.

And next time, buy yourself a can of "air", around $3.00, to clean the dust from inside your computer.

"the little gold prongs on the bottom of it" - You mean the little pins underneath ?

They kind of belong to the CPU which the heatsink and fan rest on top of. So you actually "broke" your Processor, try straightening out the pins, and placing it in again, otherwise, you're going to need a new CPU.

At least you're smarter than some people I encounter, especially the ones that think their computer box is called the hard drive.

Are you particular you do no longer recommend the pins on the backside of the CPU? Heatsink fins won't possibly count, your pc will nonetheless boot. yet once you broke the CPU pins you're out of luck.

uhhh, hold on one sec. if u mean you took out the fan and the little square thing underneath, and bent the pins on that thing that was your processor, and if so, ur screwed, get a new one if this is the case, i dont think you can bend the pins back

I will tell you what to do... never, never play with things you don't know anything about... your going to need a new processor, for a start... and it could be a graphics chip/board. if you have not blown the motherboard

use the tip of a mechanical pencil without lead to straighten the pins

Sounds like you bent the pins too far and they are not connecting. FYI- those are your processor/CPU pins
