2 buses leave New York at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus averages 55 mph and the other bus averages 45 mph. After how many hours will the buses be 400 apart?

Each hour they move 100 miles away from each other.

So it'll take 4 hours to be 400 miles away.

So you can write an equation like this:
D=100h where D stands for distance apart. and h means hours.

So to figure out when the two buses are 400 miles apart plug in 400 for D.
400=100h
divide each side by 100 to get h
h=4
it takes 4 hours.

There's nothing to model. They're separating at the rate of 100mph. In 4 hrs. they will be 400 miles apart.

45t+55t=400
(45+55)t=400
100t=400
t=400/100
t=4 hours
