When do I use them? Here's my problem:

"Afterwards, open the refrigerator or freezer."

It's the beginning of a new paragraph. Thanks for your help.

I think it's afterward but I believe you can use either one.

Afterword is singular and afterwords is plural. For example - I am going to a friends house afterwards. For example - Afterward I will enjoy a McDonalds cheeseburger. Blessings

It is always 'afterwards'.
