Not a term used much any more; it just means the time before the Cambrian, which began about 570 million years ago, so it began with the earth forming about 4.5 billion years ago. For more specific info on the new divisions of this time, see:

Easy -- they lived 65 million to about 200 million years ago, and 70 million years ago is in that range. "Yes some theist do like science too..." Then I suggest you go learn something about it. First, the rate that the moon is moving away from the earth is faster now than it was 100 million years ago (if you'll go learn about tidal friction, you might understand why). Second, take a few seconds and do the math: 70 million years would be 70 million inches closer (if the rate of about an inch per year *had* been the same, even though it hasn't). 70 million inches is about 5.8 million feet, or 1,105 miles closer -- less than 0.5%. Not enough closer to cause any noticeable change in the tides (the moon's orbit is an ellipse, with a variance of *more* than 1100 miles every month). Next time, before you make yourself look rather ignorant, just do the math. edit: "Sorry to disappoint some of you'll for a theist that used science instead of the bible." But you *didn't* use science. You didn't even take the ten seconds required to do a very simple math problem.

adrie,

Howard is right, the "precambrian" is just the term used to describe all the time before the cambrian, and it is the very first era of earth's history. It began about 4.5 billion years ago.
