Named for Queen Elizabeth I, then also known as the Virgin Queen.

I could be wrong, but I believe it was named after the Virginia Company from England. The Virginia Company sponsored the groups of people who originally settled James Town.

It was a British colony named for the British Queen, Elizabeth the first who was called the virgin queen
