This is as common as the leaves turning colours in the fall . It is the summer dust that has collected onto the furnace heat exchanger through the summer that is giving the bad odor as the heat exchanger cooks it . What i found works great to distract you from the smell is a scented air freshener that you actually hang onto the furnace filter and when the blower comes on you can have a nice smell throughout the house . I sell them as part of my furnace service to my customers and I never had one complaint about a bad smell . They are called whole house air fresheners check with most hardware stores should carry a variety of scents I prefer the pine scent through out the winter months . As far as your cat maybe you can try and hang a bag of cat nip on the filter next to the scented air freshener .

They always smell funny first time
if their was a problem the safetys would kick in
I take it the furnace other than smelling
is working fine.
after the first time and all the dust is burned off then the smell goes away
at least it does at my house.
My old house had a floor furnace
My daughter has checker board feet from waliking on the thing. OUCH! she is 29 years old now, I still remember her and her cousin walking gingerly AROUND the floor furnace in the hall. Anyway I had to remove tons of stuff from that furnace before lighting it and talk about stink . I love the smell of tootsie rolls and crayons in a floor furnace. LOL!

You maybe should have gone through a maintenance check first like I tell everyone to do. Check the plenum, I hope your cat is a male, if not, check the plenum for babies. You never know.

If everything is O.K. then vacuum out the pelenium and wipe the dust bunnies out, change the filter (s) and check the humidifiers if any. Check all the control units and the gages, wipe them all down. Better now then when it's twenty below and the furnace isn't working.

Check it for dead mice also, I have seen this before too, they can be very nasty.

It is just the summer dust burning off. It is harmless though annoying. Don't worry, it will be gone in a day or two of the furnace running.

Maybe! Every year that I can remember, it usually smells the first time the heat comes on each fall. Keep the windows open a crack just in case.

Please have your furnace and flue checked immediately, people die from poorly ventilated heating systems, it is not worth a few dollars to worry about this, your cat is trying to tell you something, Please!
