The pyramids in Egypt were built as tombs for the Pharaohs during the Old Kingdom.
Each pyramid had its own temple and auxiliary buildings enclosed by a low retaining wall. Some of the pyramids,such as those at Giza had causeways that led to purpose built quays . During construction these were used for offloading the limestone blocks of masonry that had been mined in the Muqatten Hills on the other side of the Nile.
The pyramid is a and "extension" of the mastaba tombs. These were raided flat topped structures built of masonry. The name mastaba comes from its similarity in form to the long benches of the same name used for sitting out doors in ancient and modern Egypt.Most ancient Egyptians were interred in mastabas. After the building of the huge pyramids proved to be such a strain on the economic and man power resources the Pharaohs reverted to the use of mastabas for their own internment. The mastaba was then topped by a pyramidion or small pyramid this practise continued until the New Kingdom.

You will find loads of information on either site. the BBC site has an interactive game where you can build your own pyramid and be rated on whether it would have been successful or not. This way you can get an idea of whether you have taken the info in correctly.
Try and avoid using wikipedia it is full of inaccuracies regarding ancient Egypt.

I would not go basing your assignment on unfounded therories that the pyramids have anything to do with aliens. The only remaining mystery regarding the pyramids is just why the continue to remain a mystery to so some people.

The real answer is that no one really knows. There is a lot of debate over whether they were built as tombs because there have never been any remains found within a Pyramid. Many think they were built as a means of communication with the gods or entities from space. Some think that they were astronomical objects. Many believe the tomb theory. but in point of fact... Nobody really knows. They are awesome though. You can't believe how huge they are and when standing next to them you can understand why some people believe that the "space people" helped to build them. Its a great attraction. I spent several days there last year and did the full exploration. Amazing!

Pyramids were basically tombs for the Kings and Queens. And to give all those slaves something to do..LOL!

really? you can't find info on the pyramids? they were originally built for pharoahs and their entourage to rest in when the pharoah bit the dust. they were filled with all the valuables of the pharoah and food, wine etc for the journey to the afterlife. try clicking this,http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/pyramid/explore/builders.html
