He's already ruled out the Raven.

I kind of want something that works on its own, too.

The Black Cat - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Cat_%28short_story%29.

Cute, cheap, works on its own. To make it more like the Poe story, add some sharp claws and some fake blood around your mouth.

Pallas Athena - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athena

The bust of Pallas that the raven perches upon. You could paint your face grey to look like a statue, and if you really wanted to go all out, get a fake raven/crow and perch it on your head.

I like the Lenore and Annabel Lee ideas, but they wouldn't really work on their own.

Dress up as one of his characters like Lenore or Anabell Lee. Or you could be his younger cousin (whom I think he may have been in love with, if I remember what my English teacher said)

And have him carry around a leather-bound note book and a quill (or just a feather) and have him pretend he's writing a story and that you're the character from said story.
Good luck and hope this helps.

EDIT- I was right, he did marry his cousin, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe, when she was just 13. And when she died, blood started pouring from her mouth (because she died of a broken blood vessel) so you could be like his dead wife with blood coming out of your mouth. Poe became depressed after her death and wrote Anabell Lee, which is thought to be about Virginia. So you could be Virginia and your boyfriend could be writing Anabell Lee for Halloween.

Try George Sand. She was a very independent soul, a writer I believe. But she may have been a Lesbian; don't know if that would be acceptable to you. She was always going around in men's clothes. She was a great friend of the renowned pianist, F. Chopin.

Look her bio. up on the Internet. Think you will find her interesting; whether or not you decide to dress up like her for Halloween.

You should be whatever you want! Express yourself! But if you'd like to match up with him, be Sarah Elmira Royster, Edgar Allan Poe's first wife.

You could be dead Virginia Poe, his wife who he secretly married when she was 13. She died from a broken blood vessel. When it happened, blood ran out her mouth, so you could put some fake blood running out your mouth. Plus, that way you wouldn't have to be directly with him, you could be a zombie lady too. Hope this helps!

You should go as Fortunato, from the The Cask of Amontillado. You could put yourself behind a nice brick wall mask with one brick missing and say "for the love of god, montresor!" all night. LOL!
