Stress Coat is a dechlorinator, and is also used to help replenish the slime coat of fish that have recently been netted. So it's a good idea to use when you add fish to your tank, and when you do water changes. Activated carbon is used in filters to remove toxins from the water.

Stress coat is a water conditoner that removes harmful chemicals like chlorine from tap water. It's companion is Stress Zyme, that replaces beneifical bacteria in the tap water. Stress coat should be used on the water when first placed in the tank, and then used to treat the water used in your weekly water changes to prevent the harmful chemicals in tap water from hurting the fish.

Activated carbon is a chemically enhanced rock that helps remove harmful chemicals and some organic waste from the aquarium. Most filters have a small amount of activated carbon in the filter, although some people make their own filter cartridges to 'boost' thier chemical filtering. Also, make certain to rinse the activated carbon before use, Carbon dust can be bad for the fish and there tends to be some in the filter when you get it.
