The onion is widely used for medicinal purposes. Much like garlic, onions have antibiotic qualities, can improve circulation, lower high blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar levels, and decrease the symptoms of colds and coughs. Eating plenty of onions will give you good health and bad breath. Eating parsley will help to neutralize onion breath.
Onion may help remove a wart if you rub a cut piece on the wart once a day until it disappears. Rubbing onion on the skin is also thought to improve acne. If you have been stung by a bee or bitten by a mosquito rubbing onion on the bite can ease the pain. A bit of crushed onion mixed with salt can soothe a burn.
We are always looking for ways to get onion odors out of our countertops, cutting boards, and kitchens. It might seem strange that onions can be used to remove the odor of paint from your home but it works! If you have just painted a room and you want to get rid of that strong paint smell you can put a peeled onion in a bucket half filled with water in the center of the room. If you have just painted your cabinets place a cut onion on a dish and put it inside the cabinet to remove the smell.
You can make your own insect repellent using onion and mineral oil. Place chopped or minced onion in a dish and cover it with mineral oil. Leave the dish near a window for approximately 5 days and then remove the onion pieces from the oil. Put the oil into an empty spray bottle and add a cup of water. Shake the mixture well and your spray is ready.
Onionskin can be used to make colorful dyes. To make onionskin dye you simply bring some water to a boil and place the skins into it. Simmer the skins for up to an hour. Yellow onionskins will make an orange dye and red onionskins will give you a nice purple color. You can save your dye in a container for later use. Many people like to dye their own Easter Eggs by boiling eggs in a pan of water containing onionskins.
An effective brass polish can be made with onions. Boil several onions in a pan of a few inches of water for two hours. Use the water to polish your brass.
If you burn your rice at dinnertime onions can help you to salvage it. Remove the rice that has not been discolored from the brown of the pan and place it into a bowl. Place several brown onionskins on top of the rice and cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap. In about ten minutes the burnt taste will be gone from your rice.
After handling onions you will want to get the smell from your hands. Try rubbing lemon juice and salt into your skin and rinsing it with cool water. Keep a bag of onions in the house at all times. They are great tasting, useful, and if they start to grow just put them into the ground or a pot of dirt and you will soon have more onions.
