There are some wild, but tame elk in our nature preserve. They are wild, because they live pretty much without human intervention, but they are tame because they have come to expect feedings by the people who live in the area. They are behind a fence, but will stick their noses thru and lick my hand. I do like to feed them.

I have gathered a few things for them, and so far it looks like it's all ok, but the only unusual one is cantaloup rind, which I thought they might like because it's sweet. But is it ok to feed to elk? I don't want to cause any health problems.

Thanks!

Do you think an elk would eat cantaloupe if it found one in the wild?

If so, do you think he'd have the capacity or the inclination to remove the rind?

I doubt you would have any problem.

You likely need to consult with an exotic animal vet for a definitive answer on this. I would think if a horse can eat watermelon rind, it's probably okay, but please don't think I'm an elk expert.

It's very cool that you have them right there. They must be beautiful.
