America: Patrick Lafontaine - highest points per game average by an American. Unfortunately his career was cut short due to injuries or Modano would still be chasing him.
Canada: Bobby Orr - changed the game forever
Czech Republic: Vaclav Nedomansky - Would have been an NHL superstar in his prime unfortunately due to politics never got the chance to play in the NHL until he was 33. Along with Milan Novy; one of Jaromir Jagr's childhood heroes.
Finland: Jari Kurri, no other Finn has done as much for hockey or played as well as he has or has as many Cup rings (and when you compare Selanne's stats to Kurri.........Kurri still wins hands down).
Germany: Erich Kuehnhackl. Allegedly the greatest player in the game (according to Sam Pollock). The New York Rangers and Montreal Canadians thought so highly of him in the 70s they offered him million dollar contracts (at a time when Marcel Dionne was the leagues highest paid player at $350K)
Russia: Valeri Kharlamov, he had skills that nobody else had. Pavel Bure was a close 2nd.Sergei Makarov and Viacheslav Fetisov both called playing with Kharlamov the highlight of their careers. Unfortunately, Valery died young (just prior to or during the 1981 Canada Cup)
Slovakia: Stan Mikita and Peter Stastny, very similar players in style and substance. Marian Gaborik had the promise, but has so far failed to live up to it
Sweden: Sven 'Tumba' Johansson. In 2004, a poll picked him as the greatest Swedish player ever (by a landslide over Borje Salming) and he still holds numerous records for the Swedish national team. He was named the best forward at several World Championships won by Russia. Sundin, Forsberg, et al are nowhere near as good as Johansson.
Switzerland: Richard Torriani. Played on the Swiss National Team for 20 years. Was the Montreal Canadien's leading scorer in the 1943 and 1944 pre-seasons but got homesick and left for Switzerland each year.
