I own a shop, and do a lot of computer related work. The 1992 is a OBD-1 and you can get the codes without a scan tool. Matter of fact all it takes is a paper clip bent into a horseshoe configuration. If you look under the dash on the drivers side you will see a connector for a scan tool. Use the paper clip as a jumper to connect the top, right, two pins, together by plugging it into them. Only do this with the ignition switch off. Have a pen & paper with you, and be ready to write down the code as it flashes. Once you are ready, turn the ignition switch to the on position (NOT START) and you will see the check engine light on the dash start to blink. Read code like this; It will flash a quick flash for the first digit of the code, and then a long flash for the second digit of the code. Example: One (1) short flash = the number one (1), followed by two (2) long flashes = the number two (2). This would be a code twelve (12). Example: Five (5) quick flashes, followed by five (5) long flashes = a code 55. You will have to have access to a code book in order to know what the codes are, or mean. There will be a pause between codes, so you may have more than one code stored in the computer. Let it flash until you are certain you have written down all the numbers it flashes you. Once you complete this step, you can turn the ignition switch to the off position, remove the paper clip, and find out what these codes mean. If your check engine light doesn't work, then you may have a blown bulb for the light. If this is the case, you may have to get someone with a scan tool to get the codes for you. Auto Zone will pull the codes for you for free, but they must be able to read the OBD-1, and not the OBD-2 with the scan tool. If you still can't get any codes, then purchase a can of electronic cleaner in the spray can, and give the connector a good cleaning before attempting to retrieve them again.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
