where did the 5 and sq rt of .5312 come from? put in calc and see what you get.

7/8 x^2 -3/4x + 5/16 = 0 original question

5 (3 + or - 4i times sq rt of .5312 all over 7) calc answer...

i know the quad formula. my answer was 3 + or - 4i times the sq rt of 34 all over 7
i want to know how the calculator got the answer it got

Use quadratic formula:
x = [.75 +/- sqrt(.75^2 - 4(7/8)(5/16))]/(2*7/8)
x = [.75 +/- sqrt( -.53125)]/(7/4)
x = [4*.75 +/- 4isqrt(.53125)]/7
x = [3 +/- 4isqrt(.53125)]/7

I don't know where the 5 came from. It should not be there.

That was probably from the quadratic formula.
