OK, I know this is a dumb question, but, to where is the cable from the modem actually connected? To the cable outlet thing for my TV? I know for DSL the modem just connects to the phone jack. But where does the cable modem connect to? Also, I don't need a home phone line to get Comcast internet right? I just have a cellphone and I don't want to get a home phone line. Is there any special installation needed for Comcast? Or can I just order the modem, install it, and I'm ready to go? Or does the Comcast guy have to come and install something?

If you are using a cable tv (CATV) source for internet, you will need a CATV modem. This plugs into the CATV cable, just like a TV box does. The modem also needs electric power. It has an Ethernet port that feeds Internet signal to a router OR directly to one pc. If you have more than 1 pc, you need a router, otherwise you do not.

You do not need a land phone line if you use CATV for your Internet source.

I recommend that you rent your modem from Com Cast; if lightening hits the cable and burns out the modem, Com Cast has to replace it. If you buy it, you have to replace it.

You can install yourself if you are technically capable; it is not hard (but then I engineer and install networks and am a trained network engineer). You may need to run added cable (either coax or CAT5) so you need to be capable in this skill.
