In terms of animals that ARE typically used for pets, guinea pigs and hamsters are high maintenance, and don't give enough in return, if you ask me.
Maybe a cat will be good for you, or a goldfish.

ANY ANIMAL YOU WOULD SEE IN THE ZOO IS A BAD IDEA. EXOCTIC PETS ARE USUALLY MISTAKES. ONCE AN WILD ANIMAL, ALWAYS AN WILD ANIMAL EVEN IF YOU HAVE HAD IT SINCE A BABY. THE WILDNESS CAN COME OUT TO A CERTIAN EXTREME. IT'S JUST THE WAY ANIMALS ARE. FOR EXAMPLE CATS WEREN'T ALWAYS DOMESTIC, AND THEY DO KILL MICE, BIRDS, ETC. ONCE A HUNTER, ALWAYS A HUNTER. YOU CAN'T BREED OUT, OR TAME NATURAL INSTINCTS.

Any "cute" wild animal, such as wolves, foxes, racoons and other predators. They're cute as babies but they are hard wired for nature and have not been selectively bred as pets, like ferrets and skunks.

A snake, because it WILL bite the hand that feeds it. Cockroaches are dirrrrty, wild things. Not good at being domesticated.
