I don't think it's that long. Joe Cocker covered the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" in 1969, and the Beatles released their's in 1967. That's only two years.

A second, literally. The owner has an absolute right to "first publication," but once his is out...anyone can cover anything. Keep in mind that the cover artist will owe a fee to the copyright holder...either negotiated or via compulsory licensing.

Apparently not too long, like with Leann Rimes and 'How Do I Live'...yeah, that was actually Trisha Yearwood's song not too much earlier. Grrr! Hehehe....I think it would be nice if cover songs at least waited until people knew they were a cover, but what do I know?
